WHY DO BRANDS NEED TO #PAYUP FOR CANCELLED ORDERS?
When they receive clothing orders from global brands, garment factories pay for fabric upfront and then pay workers to sew the clothes. When brands don't pay for the goods they ordered or delay payments, the cost is incurred by the factories and the garment workers. It amounts to wage theft, as factories are in many cases unable to pay workers' paychecks or severance, pushing them out of work without any safety net during the coronavirus crisis.
WHERE CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT BRANDS CANCELLING ORDERS?
The Worker Rights Consortium and Penn State Center for Global Workers’ Rights released a detailed report in late March of 2020 surveying 300 Bangladeshi garment factories about the impact of order cancellations. You can read it here. Information on the impact of order cancellations around the world is available on Clean Clothes Campaign’s live blog. Cancellations are impacting garment workers everywhere, from the United States to Cambodia and Myanmar to Pakistan, China and beyond, so we will continue to update this website as we learn more.
WHAT LABOR RIGHTS GROUPS ARE HELPING GARMENT WORKERS DURING THIS CRISIS?
